"Pretzels, Polka & The Pursuit of Happiness" takes a German journey through Texas. The film shows us modern Americans of German descent who experience their ancestry in a variety of ways.

Four pairs of protagonists introduce us to an environment that seems stunningly German. People sing German songs, celebrate Octoberfests, speak German, and maintain Old World traditions. In doing so, the characters’ pride, shame, and sense of tradition converge in a way that is uniquely American. The film presents a complex view of modern identity.
